10 Ways to Rest (That Aren't Napping)

When we say “rest,” most of us picture the same image: horizontal, eyes closed, maybe a blanket involved. And sure, that’s rest. But it’s also just one kind, and if you’re the type who can’t sit still long enough for a nap, resents the fifteen minutes it takes to fall asleep, wakes up groggier than before you laid down, or simply doesn’t have a stretch of the day when the house is quiet enough to try — you might be writing yourself out of rest entirely.

Here’s the truth: Your body, your mind, and your emotions each get tired in their own way — which means they each need their own kind of recovery. Physical exhaustion isn’t fixed by scrolling. Mental fog isn’t fixed by sitting on the couch. And emotional depletion definitely isn’t fixed by powering through one more task.

So if napping isn’t your thing, or you simply don’t have the hour, here are ten other ways to actually rest.
